A surveyor's measuring instrument consisting of 1-foot (30.48-centimeter) steel links joined together by rings, 100 feet (30.5 meters) or 50 feet (15.25 meters) long. Also known as chain.

engineer’s chain

A distance measuring device used in land surveying consisting of a series of links; in the US, each link is 1 ft long; the length of the chain is 100 ft.
