0.04 sec. |
Chalgrin, Jean-François-Thérèse(born 1739, Paris, Fr.—died Jan. 21, 1811, Paris) French architect. He was trained by Étienne-Louis Boullée and won the Academy of Architecture's Grand Prix de Rome at age 19. His Saint-Philippe-du–Roule (1764), Paris, was influential in reviving the basilica plan as a standard for European churches; it is characterized by a simplicity of design in stark contrast to the complex interiors of existing Gothic and Renaissance churches of the time. Chalgrin died before finishing his masterpiece, the Arc de Triomphe. How to thank TFD for its existence?
