Chamberlin, T. C. (Thomas Chrowder) (1843–1928) geologist; born in Mattoon, Ill. He taught at Beloit College (1873–82), then served the Wisconsin (1876–82) and U.S. (1882–1904) Geological Surveys. He was president of the University of Wisconsin (1887–91), then became head of the geology department at the University of Chicago (1892–1919). His Alpine and North American glaciological and climatological studies were basic to his later research on the origin of the earth and the solar system.
