On the central eastern coast of TX, east of Houston; organized Feb 12, 1858 from Jefferson and Liberty counties. Name Origin: For Gen. Thomas Jefferson Chambers (1802-65), surveyor general of TX (1829), attorney, and member of secession convention (1861).

Area (sq mi): 871.99 (land 599.31; water 272.68). Pop per sq mi: 47.40.
Pop 2005: 28,411. State rank: 94. Pop change: 2000-20005 9.10%; 1990-2000 29.60%. Pop 2000: 26,031 (White 77.60%; Black or African American 9.80%; Hispanic or Latino 10.80%; Asian 0.70%; Other 7.70%). Foreign born: 5.10%. Median age: 35.10.
