Chamfort, Sébastien Roch Nicolas (sābästyăN` rōk nēkōlä` shäNfôr`), 1740–94, French writer. He is remembered only for his maxims and epigrams. In the Reign of Terror Chamfort was denounced, and he may have committed suicide.
