Champaign (shămpān`), city (1990 pop. 63,502), Champaign co., E central Ill.; inc. 1860. It adjoins the city of Urbana Urbana .

The city's economic mainstays are agriculture and the university. Founded in 1855 with the arrival of the Illinois Central RR, Champaign was first called West Urbana.

a city in the northern USA, in the state of Illinois. Population, 62,000 (1975; including the neighboring city of Urbana and the surrounding metropolitan area, 165,000). Champaign’s industries include machine building and the production of scientific equipment, instruments, and medicines.
