Champney, Benjamin (chămp`nē), 1817–1907, American painter, b. New Ipswich, N.H. Champney studied drawing and was apprenticed to a lithographer in Boston. He traveled to Europe in 1846, painting panoramic vistas of the Rhine and scenes of the Revolution of 1848. Champney, Benjamin (1817–1907) painter; born in New Ipswich, N.H. He worked as a lithographer in Boston, Mass., became a portraitist (1841), traveled to Europe (1841 and 1846–48), and exhibited panoramas in Boston and New York (1848–50). He wintered in Massachusetts, spent summers in North Conway, N.H., and painted landscapes, such as Picnic on Artist's Ledge Overlooking Conway Meadows, N.H. (1874).
