Chandigarh (chŭn`dēgər), union territory (2001 provisional pop. 900,914), 44 sq mi (114 sq km) and city, NW India. The city is the capital of both Haryana and Punjab states. It was designed by Le Corbusier Le Corbusier (lə kôrbüzyā`), pseud.

Chandigarh

City (pop., 2001: 808,515) and union territory (pop., 2001: 900,635), joint capital of Haryana and Punjab states, northern India. The territory, on the border between the two states, has an area of 44 sq mi (114 sq km). Located just south of the Shiwalik Hills, the site was selected to replace the former capital of Lahore, which became part of Pakistan at partition in 1947. The city was laid out in the 1950s by Le Corbusier in collaboration with Indian architects. Today it is a major communications junction.

The isolates from New Delhi were collected between March 1997 and March 1998, from Ahmedabad between November 1996 and July 1997, from Ranchi between February and March 1999, from Chandigarh in September 1997, from Bangalore in November 1996, from Jammu between May and July 2001, from Jaipur in May 2001, from Agra in May 2001, and from Varanasi between June and November 1999.
He has a second location in Espanola employing another two people, and one office each in Bangalore and Chandigarh, India.
All these wonders came about because of the year-long, tireless efforts of MELUS India's president, Professor Manju Jaidka of Panjab University, Chandigarh.
