In north-central MO, northwest of Columbia; organized Nov 16, 1820 (prior to statehood) from Howard County. Name Origin: For a French fur trader, probably Jean Chariton, who was also called Joseph or John Chorette. During the 1700s he established a trading post on the north bank of the Missouri River in what is now IA.
