Name Origin: For a French fur trader, probably Jean Chariton, who was also called Joseph or John Chorette. During the 1700s he established a trading post on the north bank of the Missouri River in what is now IA. Area (sq mi): 768.25 (land 755.87; water 12.38). Pop per sq mi: 10.70. Pop 2005: 8,124. State rank: 99. Pop change: 2000-20005 -3.70%; 1990-2000 -8.30%. Pop 2000: 8,438 (White 95.60%; Black or African American 3.20%; Hispanic or Latino 0.60%; Asian 0.10%; Other 0.70%).
