Charles Auguste Bériot

Bériot, Charles Auguste 

Born Feb. 20, 1802, in Louvain; died Apr. 8, 1870, in Brussels. Belgian violinist, composer, and teacher. Student of P. Baillot.

Between 1843 and 1852, Bériot was a professor at the Brussels Conservatory. (Among his students were H. Vieux-temps, F. Prume, and E. Sauret.) Bériot was one of the greatest virtuosos of the first half of the 19th century. His playing was distinguished by its singing quality, brilliance, and elegance. In 1840 he visited Russia. He went blind in 1858. Bériot’s violin works (ten concertos, variations, and other pieces) were a part of the concert repertoire for a long time.
