In 1698 Charles Lebrun wrote a treatise on the expression of the emotions in painting, and his The Brazen Serpent is a grandiose demonstration, in part based on the practice of his master Poussin, of the mimetic principles of his treatise; a treatise obviously little heeded by his contemporaries, the seventeenth-century brothers le Nain in their inert Tavern Scene, a study in clay-coloured monochrome, apart from its touches of dull red.
