On the southeastern border of SD, southwest of Sioux Falls; original county; created May 8, 1862 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For either Charles E. Mix, a commissioner of Indian affairs, or Charles H. Mix, a scout during the Civil War.

Area (sq mi): 1150.19 (land 1097.57; water 52.61). Pop per sq mi: 8.40.
Pop 2005: 9,194. State rank: 20. Pop change: 2000-20005 -1.70%; 1990-2000 2.40%. Pop 2000: 9,350 (White 69.20%; Black or African American 0.10%; Hispanic or Latino 1.90%; Asian 0.10%; Other 30.20%). Foreign born: 0.80%. Median age: 35.70.
