Charleston Sternwheel Regatta Labor Day weekend The Sternwheel Regatta was a celebration of its river-town history by Charleston, W.Va. The highlights were the sternwheel and power-boat races on the Kanawha River. There were also many other events, including concerts, parades, a car show, a distance run, and the "Anything That Floats Race." The regatta began in 1971 and attracted about a million spectators before it was retired in 2008. CONTACTS: Charleston Regatta Commission P.O.
