On the northwestern coast of MI, bordered on west by Lake Michigan; established as Reshkauko County Apr 1, 1840; name changed Mar 8, 1843. Name Origin: For Pierre Francois Xavier de Charlevoix (1682-1761), French Jesuit explorer and writer who traveled from the Great Lakes down the Illinois and Mississippi rivers to New Orleans (1720-22)
