On the northwestern coast of MI, bordered on west by Lake Michigan; established as Reshkauko County Apr 1, 1840; name changed Mar 8, 1843. Name Origin: For Pierre Francois Xavier de Charlevoix (1682-1761), French Jesuit explorer and writer who traveled from the Great Lakes down the Illinois and Mississippi rivers to New Orleans (1720-22).

Area (sq mi): 1390.76 (land 416.84; water 973.92). Pop per sq mi: 64.10.
Pop 2005: 26,722. State rank: 56. Pop change: 2000-20005 2.40%; 1990-2000 21.50%. Pop 2000: 26,090 (White 95.80%; Black or African American 0.20%; Hispanic or Latino 1.00%; Asian 0.20%; Other 3.20%). Foreign born: 1.40%. Median age: 39.10.
Income 2000: per capita $20,130; median household $39,788; Pop below poverty level: 8.00%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $26,070-$28,506.
