In east-central KS, west of Emporia; organized Feb 11, 1859 (prior to statehood) from Butler County. Name Origin: For Salmon Portland Chase (1808-73), U.S. senator from OH (1849-53), governor of OH (1855-59), and chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1864-73).
