In north-central NC, southwest of Durham; established Apr 1, 1771 (prior to statehood) from Orange County. Name Origin: For William Pitt (the Elder; 1708-78), 1st Earl of Chatham, known as "the Great Commoner," for his support of the American colonies before the Revolutionary War.
