In southwestern corner of NY, southwest of Buffalo; organized Mar 11, 1808 from Genesee County. Name Origin: For Lake Chautauqua, which is in the middle of the county; its name is a contraction of Seneca Indian words of uncertain origin and meaning; possibly 'where the fish was taken out.'

Area (sq mi): 1500.02 (land 1062.05; water 437.97). Pop per sq mi: 128.40.
Pop 2005: 136,409. State rank: 23. Pop change: 2000-20005 -2.40%; 1990-2000 -1.50%. Pop 2000: 139,750 (White 91.90%; Black or African American 2.20%; Hispanic or Latino 4.20%; Asian 0.40%; Other 3.30%). Foreign born: 1.90%. Median age: 37.90.
Income 2000: per capita $16,840; median household $33,458; Pop below poverty level: 13.80%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $21,384-$22,347.
Unemployment 2004: 5.50%. Change from 2000: 0.10%. Median travel time to work: 18.40 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 10.70%.

    On the southern border of KS, west of Joplin, MO; organized Mar 3, 1875 (prior to statehood) from Howard County, which was organized in 1855 (named Godfrey and changed to Seward in 1867) and abolished at the time of its division into Chautauqua and Elk counties. Name Origin: For Chautauqua County, NY, former home of many settlers.
