Name Origin: For Lt. Col. Jose Francisco Chaves (1833-1904), an officer during the Civil War and U.S. representative from NM (1865-67; 1869-71). Area (sq mi): 6075.07 (land 6070.86; water 4.21). Pop per sq mi: 10.20. Pop 2005: 61,860. State rank: 9. Pop change: 2000-20005 0.80%; 1990-2000 6.10%. Pop 2000: 61,382 (White 52.10%; Black or African American 2.00%; Hispanic or Latino 43.80%; Asian 0.50%; Other 25.50%). Foreign born: 11.20%. Median age: 35.20.
