Chebotarev, Nikolai Grigor’evich

Born June 3 (15), 1894, in Kamenets-Podol’skii, in what is now Khmel’nitskii Oblast; died July 2,1947, in Moscow. Soviet mathematician. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1929).

Chebotarev graduated from the University of Kiev in 1916 and became a professor at the University of Kazan in 1928. His principal studies were devoted to modern algebra. In 1924 he solved Frobenius’ problem and thereby obtained the most farreaching generalization of Dirichlet’s theorem regarding prime numbers in an arithmetic progression. In 1930 he set forth the first general theorem in resolvent theory. Chebotarev received the State Prize of the USSR in 1948 and was awarded the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and various medals.
