In north-central WA, east of Seattle; organized Mar 13, 1899 from Kittitas and Okanogan counties. Name Origin: For Chelan Lake; from a Salish Indian tribal name, tsill-anne, said to mean 'deep water.'

Area (sq mi): 2993.62 (land 2921.37; water 72.25). Pop per sq mi: 23.90.
Pop 2005: 69,791. State rank: 17. Pop change: 2000-20005 4.80%; 1990-2000 27.50%. Pop 2000: 66,616 (White 77.40%; Black or African American 0.30%; Hispanic or Latino 19.30%; Asian 0.70%; Other 15.40%). Foreign born: 12.90%. Median age: 36.30.
Income 2000: per capita $19,273; median household $37,316; Pop below poverty level: 12.40%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $25,101-$27,492.
Unemployment 2004: 6.90%. Change from 2000: -2.60%. Median travel time to work: 17.70 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 12.30%.
