On central southern border of NY, southwest of Syracuse; organized Mar 29, 1836 from Tioga County. Name Origin: For a former Seneca village near the town of Chemung. The name means 'big horn.'

Area (sq mi): 410.79 (land 408.17; water 2.62). Pop per sq mi: 219.30.
Pop 2005: 89,512. State rank: 32. Pop change: 2000-20005 -1.70%; 1990-2000 -4.30%. Pop 2000: 91,070 (White 90.20%; Black or African American 5.80%; Hispanic or Latino 1.80%; Asian 0.80%; Other 2.30%). Foreign born: 2.20%. Median age: 37.90.
Income 2000: per capita $18,264; median household $36,415; Pop below poverty level: 13.00%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $24,350-$24,349.
Unemployment 2004: 6.10%. Change from 2000: 0.80%. Median travel time to work: 19.30 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 18.90%.
