In south-central NY, southeast of Ithaca; organized Mar 15, 1798 from Herkimer and Tioga counties. Name Origin: From an Onondaga Indian word probably meaning 'bull thistle.'

Area (sq mi): 898.70 (land 894.36; water 4.34). Pop per sq mi: 57.90.
Pop 2005: 51,755. State rank: 46. Pop change: 2000-20005 0.70%; 1990-2000 -0.70%. Pop 2000: 51,401 (White 96.90%; Black or African American 0.80%; Hispanic or Latino 1.10%; Asian 0.30%; Other 1.20%). Foreign born: 1.70%. Median age: 38.40.
Income 2000: per capita $16,427; median household $33,679; Pop below poverty level: 14.40%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $21,334-$22,975.
Unemployment 2004: 5.60%. Change from 2000: 0.50%. Median travel time to work: 26.30 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 32.30%.
