Chenery, Hollis (Burley) (1918– ) economist; born in Richmond, Va. A key figure in development economics, he demonstrated that self-sustaining economic growth depends on industrialization and declining agricultural export. After teaching at Harvard (1965–70), he moved to the World Bank where he served as vice-president in charge of development policies since 1972.
