Cherenkov, Pavel Alekseyevich (pä`vĭl əlyĭksyā`yəvĭch chərĕng`kəf), 1904–90, Soviet physicist. He shared with the Soviet physicists I. M. Frank and I. Y. Tamm the 1958 Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery (1934) of Cherenkov radiation Cherenkov radiation or Cerenkov radiation [for P. A.
