On the central northern border of NE; organized Feb 23, 1883 from unorganized territory. Claims to be the largest county in the U.S. Name Origin: For Lt. Samuel A. Cherry (?-1881), an army officer.

Area (sq mi): 6009.54 (land 5960.52; water 49.02). Pop per sq mi: 1.00.
Pop 2005: 6,098. State rank: 51. Pop change: 2000-20005 -0.80%; 1990-2000 -2.50%. Pop 2000: 6,148 (White 93.80%; Black or African American 0.10%; Hispanic or Latino 0.90%; Asian 0.40%; Other 5.30%). Foreign born: 0.70%. Median age: 39.40.
Income 2000: per capita $15,943; median household $29,268; Pop below poverty level: 12.30%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $20,722-$24,787.

The holotype, a nuchal bone UNSM 76200 from UNSM Locality Cr 114, Cherry County, Nebraska (Miocene:Late Barstovian, see Holman 1995, Figure 1, 549) should remain the same.
Contamination of groundwater in Utah, transport of atrazine to Wyoming via the North Platte River, the presence of atrazine in Cherry County, Nebraska (where no atrazine use is reported), and findings of hermaphrodites at these localities further demonstrate the problem of widespread atrazine contamination.
The holotype, a nuchal bone UNSM 76200 from UNSM Locality Cr 114, Cherry County, Nebraska (Miocene:Late Barstovian, see Holman 1995, Figure 1, 549) should remain the same.
