In southwestern corner of NH, west of Manchester;original county, organized Apr 29, 1769. Name Origin: For Cheshire county in England, site of one of the estates of the Wentworths; named by NH Gov. John Wentworth (1737-1820) on its establishment.

Area (sq mi): 729.15 (land 707.40; water 21.75). Pop per sq mi: 109.30.
Pop 2005: 77,287. State rank: 6. Pop change: 2000-20005 4.70%; 1990-2000 5.30%. Pop 2000: 73,825 (White 97.30%; Black or African American 0.40%; Hispanic or Latino 0.70%; Asian 0.50%; Other 1.40%). Foreign born: 2.20%. Median age: 37.60.
Income 2000: per capita $20,685; median household $42,382; Pop below poverty level: 8.00%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $28,214-$30,506.
