Chihuly, Dale

(1941–  ) glass maker; born in Tacoma, Wash. He took his M.F.A. at the Rhode Island School of Design and, as his own work began to receive recognition, founded the Pilchuck Glass School near Seattle, Wash. (1971) to stimulate others to take up the craft of blowing glass. He has become internationally recognized as an innovative creator of colorful blown-glass abstract sculptures and architectural installations.
