Chilpancingo (chēl'pänsēng`gō) or Chilpancingo de los Bravos (chēl'pänsēng`gō thā lōs brä`vōs), city (1990 pop. 97,165), capital of Guerrero state, S Mexico. Chilpancingo serves as the regional center of agricultural industry, producing primarily corn and bananas. Its full name, Chilpancingo de los Bravos, is in honor of its heroes in the war against Spain—three brothers, of whom Nicolás Bravo was most prominent. During the war, the Congress of Chilpancingo, convened in 1813 by Morelos y Pavón, briefly established a constitutional republic based on the reforms of Hidalgo y Costilla. Chilpancingoin full Chilpancingo de los BravosCity (pop., 2000: 142,746 136,000), capital of Guerrero state, southern Mexico. Located in the Sierra Madre del Sur, it was founded in 1591 and gained prominence as the site of the first Mexican congress, convoked in 1813. Battles were fought there in both the war for independence from Spain and in the Mexican Revolution. It is an agricultural centre for the surrounding region. |
