In central AL, south of Birmingham; organized as Baker County Dec 30, 1868 from Bibb, Perry, Autauga, and Shelby counties; name changed Dec 17, 1874. Name Origin: For William Parish Chilton (1810-71), legislator, jurist, and member of the Confederate Congress.

Area (sq mi): 700.76 (land 693.98; water 6.78). Pop per sq mi: 60.20.
Pop 2005: 41,744. State rank: 30. Pop change: 2000-20005 5.40%; 1990-2000 22.00%. Pop 2000: 39,593 (White 85.60%; Black or African American 10.60%; Hispanic or Latino 2.90%; Asian 0.20%; Other 2.50%). Foreign born: 1.90%. Median age: 35.90.
