Chimbote (chimbō`tē), city (1993 pop. 268,979), capital Santa prov., Ancash dept., W Peru. A seaport on the Pacific Ocean at the mouth of the Santa River, Chimbote exports fish products, rice, cotton, sugar, minerals, and machinery. It is located on the Pan-American Highway and is a rail terminus. An earthquake destroyed much of the city in 1970; it has since been rebuilt.

Chimbote 

a city in Peru, in the department of Ancash; situated on the Pan-American Highway, near the mouth of the Santa River. Population, 103,000 (1970). Chimbóte is a port on the Pacific Ocean and has a railroad station. It has enterprises of the ferrous metallurgy industry. A large fishing center, the city produces processed fish, mainly fish meal. Fish meal and agricultural products are exported.
