Chinchón, Luis Jerónimo Fernández de Cabrera Bobadilla Cerda y Mendoza, conde de (l ēs` hārō`nēmō fārnän`dās dā käbrā`rä bōbäthē`yä sār`dä ē mĕndō`sä kōn`dā dā chēnchōn`), d. 1647, viceroy of Peru (1629–39). He sent Cristóbal de Acuña on the Teixeira expedition down the Amazon. In 1638, Chinchón's wife, suffering from persistent fever, was treated with a native remedy made from quinaquina bark. As a result, the malaria-curing qualities of quinine became known in Europe. Linnaeus called the genus of quinine-producing trees Cinchona in her honor. How to thank TFD for its existence?
