In west-central WI, east of Saint Paul, MN; organized Feb 3, 1845 (prior to statehood) from Crawford County. (A former county of the same name existed at the time of the 1830 census, covering much of what is now Douglas, Bayfield, Ashland, Iron, and Vilas counties). Name Origin: For the Chippewa River, which flows through it and near whose headwaters lived the Chippewa (properly Ojibway) Indians. Name means 'puckered', and refers to the seam in their moccasins.
