In west-central WI, east of Saint Paul, MN; organized Feb 3, 1845 (prior to statehood) from Crawford County. (A former county of the same name existed at the time of the 1830 census, covering much of what is now Douglas, Bayfield, Ashland, Iron, and Vilas counties). Name Origin: For the Chippewa River, which flows through it and near whose headwaters lived the Chippewa (properly Ojibway) Indians. Name means 'puckered', and refers to the seam in their moccasins.

Area (sq mi): 1041.32 (land 1010.43; water 30.89). Pop per sq mi: 59.30.
Pop 2005: 59,950. State rank: 24. Pop change: 2000-20005 8.60%; 1990-2000 5.40%. Pop 2000: 55,195 (White 97.50%; Black or African American 0.20%; Hispanic or Latino 0.50%; Asian 0.90%; Other 1.10%). Foreign born: 0.90%. Median age: 37.60.
Income 2000: per capita $18,243; median household $39,596; Pop below poverty level: 8.20%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $25,018-$25,999.
Unemployment 2004: 5.60%. Change from 2000: -0.20%. Median travel time to work: 21.40 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 34.10%.

Name Origin: For the Chippewa (more properly Ojibway) Indians, a tribe of Algonquian linguistic stock. The name probably means 'puckered,' and refers to the seam in their moccasins.
