Chittoor

Chittoor (chĭtr`), city (1991 pop. 133,462), Andhra Pradesh state, SE India, in the Poini River valley. Chittoor is on the Bangalore-Chennai highway. It is a market for grain, sugarcane, and peanuts; its industries include oilseed and rice milling. The city is surrounded by mango and tamarind groves, and cattle are bred in the area. Chittoor, a district administrative center, was a British military post until 1884.

As most of the people were believed to be from Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh, the collector said he was in touch with his counterpart to coordinate the relief and rescue work.
