primary education in Britain, the period of compulsory education usually received between the ages of 4 or 5 and 11 years. Considerable sociological research work has been undertaken on the primary school. It ranges from studies of STREAMING and other forms of school organization (Barker Lunn, 1970), to classroom labelling and interaction (Sharp and Green, 1975). The primary sector was the focus of the Plowden Report in 1967, the publication of which led to the establishment of EDUCATIONAL PRIORITY AREAS.
