Choke Canyon State Park Location: Park comprises two main units alongside Choke Canyon Reservoir: The Calliham Unit is 12 miles west of Three Rivers on Highway 72; the South Shore Unit is 4 miles west of Three Rivers on Highway 72. Facilities: Campsites with water and electricity hookups, tent camping, primitive campsites, group camp, horsemen's camp, showers, restrooms, day-use group facilities, picnic areas, screened shelters, hiking trails, boat ramp, playfields, fishing piers, fish-cleaning stations, amphitheater, gymnasium, game courts, playgrounds, recreation hall. Activities: Camping, boating, fishing, swimming, backpacking, mountain biking, hunting (with restrictions), birding, interpretive programs. Special Features: Paleo Indians crossed the Frio River Valley more than 10,000 years ago following game such as bison and mammoth. Later, after the large game had disappeared, nomadic hunters and gatherers associated with the Archaic culture camped near the river making tools, building fires, processing and gathering food. Numerous Archaic sites in the Choke Canyon have been recorded.
