diopsideCommon silicate mineral in the pyroxene family. Diopside is a calcium and magnesium silicate (CaMgSi2O6) that occurs in metamorphosed siliceous limestones and dolomites, in skarns, and in igneous rocks. It is also found in small amounts in many chondritic meteorites. Clear specimens of good green colour are sometimes cut as gems. How to thank TFD for its existence? Based on stream sediment sampling surveys, OGS geologists say the area contains abnormal amounts of important mineral grains such as G-10 garnets, chromites, magnesium ilmenites and chrome diopsides. The area was identified on the basis of historic sampling, by the Saskatchewan Geological Survey and the Geological Survey of Canada in the early 1990's that recovered high counts of kimberlite indicator minerals including significant concentrations of pyrope and eclogitic garnets, chrome diopside and oxides covering a large aerial extent of unglaciated terrain. At Foelsche, drilling has intersected very weathered and altered clastic breccias with a clay matrix at anomaly F14, which lies in the headwaters of streams containing macro diamonds and a suite of indicators, such as chrome diopside, picro-ilmenite and chromites. |
