Chryse Planitia

(krÿ -see) A relatively smooth Martian plain, 1600 km across and 2.5 km below the average planetary surface. It is centered on the areographic coordinates 27° N latitude, 40° W longitude (see areography). It appears to have suffered water erosion in the past and was chosen as the site of the Viking 1 landing in 1976. See Mars, surface features.
