Church, Frederick (Edwin) (1826–1900) painter; born in Hartford, Conn. Considered a member of the Hudson River School, he studied with Thomas Cole (1844–46) and traveled in Europe and South America. By 1870 he began construction of his exotic mansion, Olana, on the Hudson River. His panoramic scenes reveal his dramatic use of lighting and naturalistic details, as seen in his famous paintings Niagara (1857), and The Heart of the Andes (1859).
