Kurt Weiland, director of the Church of Scientology International, addressing the possibility of church-state problems with any of the secular organizations under ABLE, was quoted in the February 20, 2001, New York Times as saying that "nobody who does anything in drug rehabilitation or in literacy programs has to formulate that belief [in Scientology doctrines] in order to go through the program. Church of Scientology International spokeswoman Linda Simmons Hight said hundreds of Scientologists live and work in Hollywood and are entitled to vote as much as anyone else.
