Name Origin: For Fort Churchill, which was named for either Charles C. Churchill, an officer of the Third U.S. Artillery Regiment, or possibly Gen. Sylvester Churchill (1783-1862), an officer in the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War. Area (sq mi): 5023.38 (land 4929.08; water 94.30). Pop per sq mi: 5.00. Pop 2005: 24,556. State rank: 8. Pop change: 2000-20005 2.40%; 1990-2000 33.70%. Pop 2000: 23,982 (White 79.90%; Black or African American 1.60%; Hispanic or Latino 8.70%; Asian 2.70%; Other 11.50%). Foreign born: 6.00%.
