Ciego de Ávila (syā`gō dā ä`vēlä), city (1995 est. pop. 91,000), capital of Ciego de Ávila prov., central Cuba. An important processing center in a sugarcane region, it is also one of Cuba's leading producers of pineapples and oranges. Cattle raising is another major industry. The city has excellent road and rail communications. Ciego de Ávila was founded in the late 16th cent.
Ciego de Ávila 

a city in Cuba, capital of the province of Ciego de Ávila. Located on the Central Highway and the Havana-Santiago de Cuba railroad line. Population, 60,900 (1970). Ciego de Ávila, the center of an agricultural region that grows tropical fruits, has enterprises for the production of foodstuffs and textiles. The city has a thermal electric power plant.
