Cīņa
(Struggle), a Latvian-language daily newspaper published in Riga by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Latvia (CPL) and by the Supreme Soviet and Council of Ministers of the Latvian SSR. Circulation, more than 200,000 (1976). Cīņa was founded in March 1904 as the organ of the Baltic Latvian Social Democratic Labor Organization, and in June of the same year it became the organ of the Latvian Social Democratic Labor Party. It became the organ of the Social Democracy of the Latvian Territory in 1906, the organ of the Social Democracy of Latvia in 1917, and the organ of the Central Committee of the CPL in l919. Between 1904 and 1917, Cīņa was published illegally in Riga and abroad; its circulation varied from 3,000 to 18,000. From 1917 to 1919 the newspaper was published legally in Petrograd and Riga and had a circulation of 16,000. Cīņa resumed illegal publication in bourgeois Latvia in 1919; with a circulation ranging between 3,000 to 9,500, it appeared continuously from 1919 to 1931, when its printing press was discovered by the authorities, and from 1933 to 1940. The newpaper was printed in Moscow and Kiev during the Great Patriotic War of 1941–45 because of the occupation of Latvia by fascist troops.
