A New History Of Japanese Cinema: A Century Of Narrative Film" by Isolde Standish (Convenor of the Cinemas of Asia and Africa, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London) is a carefully compiled historical and analytical survey of Japanese filmmaking from 1896 when cinema in the form of Kinetoscope prototypes first arrived in Japan, to the end of the 20th Century. The first public showing as part of this international field trial will start Saturday, October 22, 2005, when "Tim Burton's Corpse Bride" opens commercially in Japan, with a digital release at "4K Pure Cinema" quality in multiple Toho cinemas in the Osaka and Tokyo regions. This is the infrastructure cinemas will need to take full advantage of the promise and potential of digital cinema. |
