(communications) A technique by which security is accomplished by converting speech into a series of on-off pulses and mixing these with the pulses supplied by a key generator; to recover the original speech, the identical key must be subtracted and the resultant on-off pulses reconverted into the original speech pattern; unauthorized listeners are unable to reconstruct the plain text unless they have an identical key generator and the daily key setting.
