circumnutation [¦sər·kəm·nü′tā·shən]
(botany) The bending or turning of a growing stem tip that occurs as a result of unequal rates of growth along the stem. Circumnutation movement by the apex of a growing stem or root of a plant resulting in a circular or elliptical configuration in a plan view. According to C. Darwin, who discovered the phenomenon, circumnutation is the simple form of autonomous movement in plants from which all other types of plant movement developed. Circumnutation has been observed in all plants studied for this purpose. It is thought that circumnutation in climbing plants is regulated by a certain balance between stimulators and inhibitors of growth. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
