Kota Kinabalu (kōt`ə kĭn'əbəl`), formerly Jesselton, town (1991 pop. 160,122), capital of Sabah, Malaysia, in N Borneo and on a small inlet of the South China Sea. It is the chief port of the state and is connected by road and rail with the interior. Rubber is exported. It was founded in 1899 and in 1947 replaced Sandakan Sandakan , city (1991 pop. 157,180), Sabah, Malaysia, on N Borneo, on Sandakan Harbor, an inlet of the Sulu Sea. It is the trade hub for an agricultural and lumbering region.

Kota Kinabalu 

(formerly Jesselton), a city and port in Malaysia, on the northwestern coast of the island of Kalimantan. Administrative center of the state of Sabah. Population, 42,000 (1970). The city has a railroad station and an airport. It is the trade center for the surrounding region, which specializes in tropical agriculture. The city’s exports include rubber, timber, and copra. Fishing is a major occupation. Kota Kinabalu was founded in 1899 and rebuilt after World War II (1939–45).
