town (1991 pop. 160,122), capital of Sabah, Malaysia, in N Borneo and on a small inlet of the South China Sea. It is the chief port and the financial and industrial center of the state .and is connected by road and rail with the interior. Rubber is exported.  as the capital of what was then British North Borneo. The town was destroyed during World War II but has since been rebuilt and modernized. There are notable modern mosques and a Roman Catholic cathedral; several universities and colleges are in Kota Kinabalu. Mt. Kinabalu, from which the city takes its name, is nearby in the east.

(formerly Jesselton), a city and port in Malaysia, on the northwestern coast of the island of Kalimantan. Administrative center of the state of Sabah. Population, 42,000 (1970). The city has a railroad station and an airport. It is the trade center for the surrounding region, which specializes in tropical agriculture. The city’s exports include rubber, timber, and copra. Fishing is a major occupation. Kota Kinabalu was founded in 1899 and rebuilt after World War II (1939–45).
