Ciudad de la Habana (sy thäth` thā lä häbä`nä, hävä`–) or La Habana, province (1994 est. pop. 2,400,000), W Cuba. Havana Havana (həvăn`ə), Span...... Click the link for more information. is the capital. The province has coastal plains in the north and south, as well as fine beaches, and there are some low mountains in the north. Included in the province is the Isle of Youth (see Youth, Isle of Youth, Isle of, Span. Isla de la Juventud, island (1989 est. pop. 71,500), 1,180 sq mi (3,056 sq km), off SW Cuba, from which it is separated by the Batabanó Gulf. Until 1978 it was called Isle of Pines. The majority of the population and industry is concentrated in and around Havana. Tobacco, sugarcane, and vegetables are the principal crops of the province, and food processing is the leading industry. Tourism was economically important until the United States and Cuba severed relations in 1960. Tourism from countries besides the United States has been encouraged since 1990. |
