The majority of the population and industry is concentrated in and around Havana. Tobacco, sugarcane, and vegetables are the principal crops of the province, and food processing is the leading industry. Tourism was economically important until the United States and Cuba severed relations in 1960. Tourism from countries besides the United States has been encouraged since 1990.
