(IGI) an institute that existed in St. Petersburg (Leningrad) from 1832 to 1931. From 1832 to 1842 it was known as the School of Civil Engineers, from 1842 to 1882 as the School for Structural Engineering, and after 1882 as the Institute of Civil Engineering. The school trained architectural, civil, and mechanical engineers. Many Russian and Soviet architects who played an important part in the development of national architecture, including V. A. and A. A. Vesnin. A. I. Gegello, A. I. Dmitriev, L. A. Il’in, and A. S. Nikol’skii, were trained at IGI. In 1931, IGI merged with the Institute of Municipal Services and the architecture department of the State Higher Institute of Art and Technology to form the Leningrad Institute for Municipal Construction Engineers.
