In northern OR, south of Portland; original county; organized Jul 5, 1843 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For the Clackamas tribe of Chinook Indians; meaning of name is unknown.

Area (sq mi): 1879.01 (land 1868.17; water 10.83). Pop per sq mi: 197.20.
Pop 2005: 368,470. State rank: 3. Pop change: 2000-20005 8.90%; 1990-2000 21.40%. Pop 2000: 338,391 (White 89.10%; Black or African American 0.70%; Hispanic or Latino 4.90%; Asian 2.50%; Other 5.70%). Foreign born: 7.10%. Median age: 37.50.
