On the southwestern border of MS, south of Vicksburg; organized Jan 27, 1802 (prior to statehood) from Jefferson County. Name Origin: For William Charles Cole Claiborne (1775-1817), governor of the Mississippi Territory (1801-05), of the Orleans Territory (1804-12), and of LA (1812-16).

Area (sq mi): 501.36 (land 486.77; water 14.59). Pop per sq mi: 23.60.

Name Origin: For William Charles Coles Claiborne (1775-1817), governor of the Mississippi Territory (1801-05), of the Orleans Territory (1804-12), and of LA (1812-16), and U.S. representative from TN (1797-1801).
